There is a story told about the old mystic Ramakrishna. One day his disciples asked him about God. Ramakrishna seemed happy to oblige, but required clarification: “God with attributes or God without?” I was in my mid-thirties, barely past the profound awakening that would change absolutely everything in my life when I first read this short dialogue. It would have helped hugely to have read it twenty, even ten years before because the question immediately fell into place in my psyche and soul. All in one moment, a large chunk of my culturally imposed ideas of God fell away, like a massive iceberg calving.
